About us

The Bureau provides an advice service for patients, staff and carers in relation to mental health issues. It operates at the Michael Carlisle Centre and the Longley Centre, inpatient sites in Sheffield. Other work includes:

  • visits to the forensic unit at Forest Lodge, and to the rehab service at Forest Close bungalows, mobileparked
  • mobile advice bus to St Wilfrid's Centre,
  • advice service in GP surgeries (this is a pilot service),
  • home visits to people using mental health services, who are unable to get to their local advice centre due to their mental health difficulties,
  • training sessions for staff and users of mental health services,
  • talks to groups,
  • participation with other advice agencies and mental health organisations in meetings and campaigns to promote take-up of benefits and services in the city.

The service to St Wilfrid's is via our 'Mobile Service', which is a specially adapted vehicle converted into a mobile Citizens Advice Bureau, originally funded by a Lottery grant.

We actively recruit mental health service users to volunteer as advice workers and in other roles within the bureau - see Volunteer on the menu above for more information.

The CAB scored 94% for its audit in 2008, making it one of the top ten Citizens Advice Bureaux in the country for quality of advice.

We also hold a Legal Services Commission Quality Mark.
